What is Botulinium Toxin?
Botox®, Dysport® and XEOMIN® are neuromodulators that work by relaxing the muscles that are treated with this medication. With careful placement, one can achieve reduction of facial wrinkles such as of the forehead, the stubborn ‘11’ lines between the brows, and the crow’s feet around the eyes.
FAQs
Botox® is best utilized to treat lines or wrinkles that are formed with animation or movement of the face. Think of it when you raise your eyebrows and the wrinkles are created in the forehead or when you frown causing the ‘11’ lines between the eyebrows to appear. Botox® is the best option to help reduce these lines. Botox® can also help with crow’s feet wrinkles around the corner of the eye when you smile.
If Botox® is precisely injected into the muscles that depress the eyebrow, the eyebrow can lift slightly creating a natural elevation of the eyebrow. The lift is conservative but many patients feel the heaviness around their eyes improves and like the aesthetic of the Botox® brow lift as well. It is a great nonsurgical option to elevate the eyebrows.
Botox® can last anywhere from 3-6 months but in general, Dr. Patel finds most patients come back between 4-6 months for repeat treatment.
Botox® typically takes about 3 days to notice any benefit and maximal benefit often occurs at 1 week with the effects lasting up to 3-6 months.
In general, there will be mild areas of swelling that look like bee stings where the medicine was injected. This resolves over 30 minutes to 1 hour. Rarely, you may develop a slight bruise. With the approval of your doctor, it is important to avoid any blood thinning medications for 1 week prior to treatment to minimize bruising risk. To be safe, Dr. Patel suggests not having any important social functions for 10 days after the treatment.
Many providers may state Botox® injection is painless. Dr. Patel would be remiss if he stated the same. Botox® can cause mild discomfort but there are techniques employed to make it as comfortable an experience as possible. This includes application of a numbing cream, ice, distraction techniques, and using a fine needle.
The goal with Botox® or any service Dr. Patel provides is to make the results as natural as possible. No one should be able to tell you had anything done in the first place except you look much more refreshed.
